Odin (Brokkr-2)

Spacecraft· AstroForgelost

Odin (Brokkr-2) — the second mission of the asteroid-mining company AstroForge, launched on 27 February 2025 (UTC) on the Falcon 9 that carried Intuitive Machines' IM-2 lander toward the Moon. The company aimed it at a flyby of the small asteroid 2022 OB5 about 300 days later, to photograph it. Ground stations caught only two signals from it, 7 and 15 hours after launch; on 6 March AstroForge said the chance of talking with Odin was minimal, and nothing more was heard from it. (Its position here is representative.)

Mission

Odin, earlier called Brokkr-2, was the second mission of AstroForge, a company that aims to mine asteroids for metals. It was to fly past the small asteroid 2022 OB5 and photograph it, about 300 days after launch. The company built the craft itself, after its supplier's first version failed vibration testing in 2024; it weighed about 120 kg (100 and 105 kg in other AstroForge figures). It was launched on 27 February 2025 at 00:16 UTC on the Falcon 9 that carried Intuitive Machines' IM-2 lander toward the Moon, and released about 48 minutes later. Ground stations caught only two signals from it: a 13-second burst about seven hours after launch, which showed its computer running and its power coming from its solar panels, and a second, corrupted, about 15 hours after launch. AstroForge's leading explanation is that its solar panels did not fully extend and lock; its ground stations also suffered a string of failures. On 6 March 2025 AstroForge said that the chance of talking with Odin was minimal, as the accuracy of its position was becoming an issue. Nothing more was heard from it.
