Dwarf Planet· orbits the Sun

Eris is the most massive known dwarf planet — slightly heavier than Pluto — orbiting in the scattered disc far beyond the Kuiper belt. Its 2005 discovery prompted astronomers to formally define 'dwarf planet'. It has one moon, Dysnomia. Surface temperature is estimated near 30 K.

The Greek goddess of strife and discord — apt, given the controversy it caused.

Eris was found in 2005 in images from Palomar Observatory and, being more massive than Pluto, forced astronomers to decide what counts as a planet. The result was the IAU's 2006 definition that demoted Pluto and created the 'dwarf planet' category. Eris, in the scattered disc far beyond Neptune, has a moon, Dysnomia, and one of the most reflective surfaces in the Solar System.
