Mission

Ingenuity was never supposed to do much. Carried to Mars tucked beneath the Perseverance rover, the four-pound helicopter was a technology demonstration with a modest goal: prove that powered, controlled flight is even possible in the wisp-thin Martian air, which is about one percent as dense as Earth's. NASA hoped for up to five short flights. It got seventy-two. Flying on Mars is genuinely hard. The atmosphere is so thin that ordinary blades would find almost nothing to push against, so Ingenuity's two counter-rotating rotors had to be light, broad and spin furiously fast — around 2,500 revolutions per minute, several times faster than a helicopter on Earth. And because radio signals take minutes to cross to Mars, no one could fly it with a joystick; each flight had to be planned in advance and flown by the craft itself. On 19 April 2021 it rose a few metres above Jezero crater, hovered, and landed — the first powered, controlled flight by any aircraft on another world, a moment often compared to the Wright brothers' first hop. A small piece of fabric from the original Wright Flyer was tucked aboard in tribute. What began as a test became a scout. Over nearly three years Ingenuity flew again and again, ranging ahead of Perseverance to photograph terrain, scout routes and find science targets, flying farther and faster than its designers had dared to plan, surviving brutal cold nights and dust. The end came in January 2024: during a flight over featureless, dune-filled terrain that made navigation difficult, it made a hard landing and damaged a rotor blade, ending its flying career. But it had already rewritten the rules — proving aircraft can explore other planets, and inspiring the flying scouts now planned for future Mars missions.
