Surveyor 1 answered a question that had to be settled before any astronaut could risk it: would a spacecraft setting down on the Moon rest on solid ground, or sink into the dust? In the early 1960s some scientists feared the surface was covered in a deep, treacherous powder that might swallow a lander whole. On 2 June 1966, Surveyor 1 settled gently onto the Moon in the Ocean of Storms — the first American soft landing on another world, and only the second ever, months after the Soviet Luna 9. Its footpads pressed only slightly into the soil. The ground was firm. It then returned more than 11,000 photographs of its surroundings, showing a landscape on which astronauts could one day walk and work. Surveyor 1 was the first of a programme of seven robotic landers (1966-68) that NASA sent ahead of Apollo to prove the techniques and scout the terrain. Together the Surveyors demonstrated controlled descent, photographed candidate sites and even tested the soil's strength — Surveyor 3 was later visited in person by the Apollo 12 astronauts, who brought pieces of it home to study how lunar materials had weathered. Unglamorous and often forgotten beside the crewed landings they made possible, the Surveyors were the patient reconnaissance behind the giant leap.
