Mission
Gemini 5 turned the young American space programme into an endurance test. Launched on 21 August 1965, Gordon Cooper and Pete Conrad set out to spend eight days in orbit — as long as a round trip to the Moon — at a time when no American had flown for more than four days and physicians still worried that a week of weightlessness might harm the body. The flight was nearly cut short within hours: its fuel cells, carried for the first time to give a capsule the electrical power a long mission needs, lost pressure, and the crew had to power down and coax the system back to life. They pressed on for 120 orbits, and on 26 August passed the Soviet Vostok 5 mark — the first time an American mission held the world record for spaceflight duration. Cooper and Conrad splashed down on 29 August after just under eight days, a flight trimmed only slightly by an approaching hurricane. Gemini 5 proved that crew, spacecraft and fuel cells alike could last the length of an Apollo mission — the endurance the Moon landings would demand.
