Mission

The Hubble Space Telescope is arguably the most influential scientific instrument of the modern era. Launched aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery on 24 April 1990, the bus-sized observatory orbits about 540 km up, above the blurring and absorbing effects of the atmosphere. Its early promise was nearly ruined: its 2.4-metre mirror had been ground to slightly the wrong shape, leaving images blurred. In a dramatic 1993 servicing mission, astronauts installed corrective optics — in effect, spectacles for the telescope — restoring its sight. Four more Shuttle servicing missions, the last in 2009, upgraded its instruments and kept it running far beyond its planned life. Over three decades Hubble has made more than 1.5 million observations, from planets and nebulae in our own neighbourhood to galaxies whose light left them over 13 billion years ago. It pinned down the universe's expansion rate, helped reveal that the expansion is accelerating — the work behind a Nobel Prize — and produced era-defining images such as the 'Pillars of Creation' and the Hubble Deep Field. Still working today alongside the James Webb Space Telescope, Hubble has reshaped both professional astronomy and the public's view of the cosmos.
