Lunar Trailblazer — a small NASA orbiter, led by Caltech and built by Lockheed Martin, that was lost shortly after launch. It rode the same Falcon 9 as IM-2 on 27 February 2025, bound for lunar orbit to map the Moon's water — where it is, what form it takes, and how it shifts through the lunar day — with an imaging spectrometer (HVM3) and a thermal mapper (LTM). But after separation its solar arrays never pointed at the Sun, the batteries went flat, and the spacecraft fell into a slow spin. With no power, controllers could never establish the two-way contact needed to command the corrective burns, and it drifted away into deep space. NASA formally ended recovery efforts on 31 July 2025. The underlying cause of the array mis-orientation was still under review; what is known are the symptoms — low power, a tumble, and no command link. Mission

Lunar Trailblazer was small, clever and cheap — and it never got the chance to work. A washing-machine-sized NASA orbiter led by Caltech and built by Lockheed Martin, it was part of a program that flies low-cost science missions as secondary passengers, accepting higher risk in exchange for a fast, affordable ride. Its job was to answer a deceptively simple question about the Moon's water: not just whether it is there, but where it collects, what form it takes, and how it comes and goes across the lunar day. Two instruments — an imaging spectrometer called HVM3 and a thermal mapper called LTM — were designed to map that water from orbit in fine detail. It launched on 27 February 2025, riding the same Falcon 9 as Intuitive Machines' Athena lander. Then things went wrong quickly. After the spacecraft separated, its solar arrays never turned to face the Sun. The batteries drained, the craft slipped into a slow tumble, and with almost no power the ground team could never establish steady two-way contact — so they could not command the engine burns needed to steer it onto course for the Moon. Radar and telescopes tracked it drifting off into deep space. For months engineers listened and waited, hoping the spacecraft might catch enough sunlight as it tumbled to wake up. It never did. NASA formally ended the mission on 31 July 2025. The exact reason the arrays failed to point at the Sun was still under review; what is known are the symptoms — low power, a spin, and silence. It is the flip side of flying missions cheaply and often: sometimes one is simply lost, and the value is in what its loss teaches the small satellites that follow.
