Mission

The loss of Challenger on 28 January 1986 was the first in-flight disaster of the American space program, and it unfolded live on television before a nation that included schoolchildren watching their teacher fly to space. STS-51-L carried seven astronauts: commander Dick Scobee, pilot Michael Smith, mission specialists Ronald McNair, Judith Resnik and Ellison Onizuka, payload specialist Gregory Jarvis, and Christa McAuliffe, a New Hampshire schoolteacher chosen from thousands to be the first 'Teacher in Space'. Seventy-three seconds after liftoff, Challenger broke apart; the crew cabin fell to the Atlantic. All seven were killed. The cause was not bad luck but a known, ignored risk. The solid rocket boosters were sealed by rubber O-rings, and in cold weather those rings lost their resilience. The morning of the launch was unusually frigid, below freezing, and engineers at the booster contractor Morton Thiokol had warned the night before that the O-rings might fail in the cold and urged a delay. Under schedule pressure, their warning was overruled by managers. At ignition a seal failed, hot gas burned through the joint, and the escaping flame breached the external tank, destroying the vehicle. The Rogers Commission that investigated the accident — its members including the physicist Richard Feynman, who famously demonstrated the rings' brittleness by dropping a sample into ice water — found a NASA culture that had normalised flying with known flaws, and a breakdown in communication between engineers and managers. The Shuttle did not fly again for thirty-two months while the boosters were redesigned and the agency's decision-making overhauled. Challenger ended the illusion that spaceflight had become routine, and it made the voices of dissenting engineers harder to ignore. The crew is memorialised across the country — in schools, in craters on the Moon, and at Kennedy Space Center — and McAuliffe's lessons, recorded but never taught from orbit, were finally delivered to classrooms decades later.
